History of Pharmacy in the USA
The origins of pharmacy in the USA can be traced back to ancient practices where the use of natural remedies began. Historically, the first medicinal actions, such as extracting juice from plants to treat wounds, marked the beginnings of this healing profession. In Greek mythology, Asclepius, the god of healing, entrusted Hygieia with the role of compounding remedies, highlighting the early association between pharmacists and the preparation of medicinal substances.
In ancient Greece and Rome, as well as throughout the Middle Ages in Europe, there was a clear distinction between the roles of physicians and herbalists. Herbalists provided the necessary raw materials for physicians to create pharmacy medicines, underscoring a collaborative relationship between the two roles. The influence of Arabic pharmacy medicine in the 8th century AD further solidified this separation, leading to the development of specialized roles within healthcare. This trend was formally recognized when a law passed in Bruges in 1683 prohibited physicians from compounding medications, leading to an increased focus on the pharmacist’s responsibilities.
In the USA, Benjamin Franklin contributed to the professionalization of pharmacy by appointing an apothecary to the Pennsylvania Hospital, reinforcing the importance of separating the two professions.
Since World War II, the field of pharmacy in the USA has witnessed significant advancements, particularly in drug discovery and formulation. This evolution has transformed the pharmacist’s role, reducing the focus on traditional compounding techniques that were once common, such as preparing bougies, cachets, pills, plasters, and potions. Today, pharmacists play a crucial role in ensuring that prescribers’ intentions are met by providing valuable advice, formulating and dispensing appropriate dosage forms, and guaranteeing the efficacy and quality of medicinal products. This modern approach to pharmacy highlights the vital function pharmacists serve in healthcare.
